Routine Eye Examinations

Examinations are provided by a combination of the doctor and the paraoptometric assistants. We use the latest in computer and laser instruments to ensure the best result. The examination will vary from patient to patient depending on the health of the individual and their visual needs. Typically, it may include;

-Medical History, Measurement of Visual Acuity, Pupil Dilation (to evaluate the back part of the eyes), Intraocular Pressure (Glaucoma), Blood Pressure, Visual Field Test, Analysis, Diagnosis, Prescription (lenses or medicine) and Prognosis.

Optical Dispensing

Our optical laboratory has the latest in equipment to not only fabricate your glasses, but to maintain and repair them, should they become broken or damaged. We are able to tint, coat, harden and edge spectacle lenses. We are able to provide you with any frame or any lens design that is found in the world. Our highly qualified optician and staff are able to adjust and fit your glasses to you for extended comfort and vision.

Contact Lenses

We prescribe and evaluate all major brands of soft and rigid contact lenses. Additionally, we prescribe custom designed contact lenses for special needs as well as special eye problems. Specialized fitting may include: Monovision, bifocal contact lenses, astigmatism contacts, Ortho K and Keratoconus.

We have experience in modifying and polishing contacts. Our staff are able to answer many of your questions and are available for ongoing contact lens instruction and training.

Vision Therapy

We offer Vision Therapy to children that Dr. Hertneky has found to have vision related learning difficulties. A series of tests are performed to determine if the eyes work together as a team. Distance and close-up focusing efficiency are also studied. These are tests not commonly performed by all eye doctors. Efficient performance at school or at work is directly related to these visual skills. If Dr. Hertneky had determined that a person has a visually related learning problem, he will recommend a course of Vision Therapy. As 80% of what a child learns is taken in by visual means, a visually related learning problem can severely hamper a child's ability to learn. Being able to see 20/20 is a good start, but it is important that all eye functions are working the way they should.

Laser Vision Correction

We are your local source for getting the right procedure to best serve your needs. Laser vision correction can be a wonderful procedure to correct those qualified people who wish to reduce the amount of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism that they currently have. Dr. Hertneky only works with reputable surgeons and centers in Denver. Most of the preoperative and all post-operative visits are done right here in Yuma with Dr. Hertneky. Not only will this save you time and travel expense, but you will also have the knowledge that a local expert that you trust is helping you with all aspects of the surgery.

Sunglasses

We offer a wide variety of assorted prescription and non-prescription sunglasses. Dr. Hertneky and Dr. Vanek recommend that people wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun's ultraviolet rays. The damaging u.v. rays can cause cataracts and macular degeneration. We can also apply a clear (undistinguishable by human eyes) u.v. coating to prescription lenses for daily wear.

Eye Disease Management

Dr. Hertneky and Dr. Vanek co-manage cataract surgery, laser surgery for far-sightedness, astigmatism, and myopia. They provide management of chronic dry eyes, eye infections, eyelid problems, and eye allergies. They are skilled in removing foreign bodies from eyes. They also works with various specialists including retinal specialists, corneal specialists, and glaucoma specialists for hard-to-manage cases. Our clinic has equipment to manage glaucoma including a state-of-the-art Humphrey Automated Perimeter.

Cataract Surgery

We offer cataract surgery on a co-management basis in conjunction with Warren Tripp, M.D. and the Yuma District Hospital. You, the patient, benefit from the cooperative and combined efforts of doctors and the hospital working together on your behalf. Cataract surgery is performed in the Yuma District Hospital on the third Monday of the even months (February, April, etc.) We also work with other surgeons; however, their surgery is located out of town. For further information, please contact our office.

YAG Laser Capsulotomy

Approximately 20% of patients will develop haze of a membrane behind the intraocular lens (IOL) implant following cataract surgery, which results in diminished vision. This condition can be thought of as a scarring process in the capsule or membrane, which contained the natural lens (cataract) of the eye. For the convenience of our patients, this condition can be treated by Dr. Tripp in our office with a procedure known as a YAG laser capsulotomy. The procedure is painless and patients can resume their normal activiites immediately.

OCT

The OCT is a non-invasive test that allows us to view cross-sectional images of the retina much like a CAT scan or MRI.  This device allows for the diagnosis of eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye complications and other diseases of the optic nerve and macula months, or in some cases years earlier than standard eye examination methods, allowing for more successful treatment outcomes.  This device can also be used to monitor the progression of these same eye diseases.

QuantifEYE

The QuantifEYE is a light response test that only takes a few minutes.  This test  measures the amount of macular pigment, which acts as a protective filter to the seeing elements in the eye, called photoreceptors.  A low level of macular pigment is one of the key risk factors for macular degeneration.  If a low level of pigment is detected a supplement can be taken to build the level back to a normal range or higher.

GDx

The GDx aids in diagnosing and managing glaucoma.  It is a non-invasive test that uses a scanning laser to measure the thickness of the tissue that surrounds the optic nerve.  This nerve tissue is what is damaged in the progression of glaucoma.  This technology allows for the detection of glaucoma years earlier than standard eye examination methods, which can help prevent vision loss from this disease.

HRT III

The HRT III is a highly advanced, confocal scanning laser opthalmoscope. It generates extremely accurate, detailed data and comprehensive analysis that simply is not possible to obtain with traditional examinations. The HRT III is used in the diagnosis and progression detection of glaucoma. It is also used in the differential diagnosis of macular degeneration. The exam is fast and safe, while a patient comfortably sits in a stationary position, a laser scans the eye for just a few seconds.

Optomap

Any routine eye exam should always include a careful look at the retina, which is located at the back of the eye, to screen for abnormalities or disease. The Optomap uses a new technology-the Panoramic200 Retinal Imaging System. The Optomap enables Dr. Hertneky and Dr. Vanek to see nearly all of a patient's retina at one time. A better view is highly beneficial for the early detection of any retinal abnormal
